An investigation into the possibilities of a new urban strategy to activate the south end of Cumberland Street, The Rocks. To find out what kinds of programs would get people ‘milling about’ in the South Cumberland st space. At the point where Grosvenor st exit slices The Rocks off from the rest of the city, near the site of the former Military Windmill, there is a curious, nameless piece of land. Over the last century the fine urban grain of terraces, warehouses and shopfronts in this area has been amalgamated and consolidated into large blocks and highway infrastructure. The resulting spaces are predominantly flat and smooth, easy to pass by but difficult to inhabit. We proposed a new type of milling to break down of the large, homogenous spaces of the CBD into discreet spaces of activity, intimacy and delight.
